Question masters of the Believe-webs 😇 meaning, J-Ryze and Mihovil:
How do I get notifications of upcoming hangouts/lifestreams? Except through YT’s famous bell notifications just the moment it starts.
February 13, 2017 at 2:23 pm #1093
omg Anita, I feel you on this.
It’s a major pain-point for many of #BelieveNation . It’s currently hard to get ‘proper notice’ for when @EvanCarmichael has a live event.
I know of no reasonable solutions currently.
I’ve wanted to fix this through an evancarmichael.com/events API Driven-Wordpress page, but it’s not really my focus.

I haven’t tried this yet Anita, but its the most promising solution I’ve found.
This Chrome plugin can be set to notify you of YouTube Live events: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/live-streaming-checker/akdjdcpngmpdcojlidemkbihnjdmgllg?hl=en
Update: I tried it, but it was too complicated,
Currently trying this simpler one, but not sure if it can do live: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/my-youtube/cphiahocnjphccbcpaabkhbppnilapeg?hl=en
Update 2: That one sucked also.
Trying this one now… it’s recent, updated as of 2017, detected all the channels I subscribed to and allowed me to “Get Desktop Notifications” the one’s I checked.

Hm, I will think about this, perhaps I will get some WP related idea how to solve it.

Perhaps I could commission it from you? What would you charge to develop this for Evan?
February 13, 2017 at 3:04 pm #1107
Agreed. Not all users use Chrome and the “native” way of doing things is always more elegant. 🙂
EDIT: Yeah, that could work. I first need to check it out. Also, I’m working (with one more guy) on something related to TDS. After that is done I will let you know and we’ll see what can be done for the events/notifications page. 🙂

Woooooo! Exciting 🙂

Chrome plugin seems to be working for me, for now…
And this might deserve a new thread lol. (done 🙂 – M)

I’ve heard text notifications can be helpful, sent an hour or two before a stream, but that might only work for US residents… Interested to see what you come up with Mihovil. And yeah not everyone uses Chrome, although I use both Chrome and Firefox.

I get the desktop notifications through Chromium (Linux user). But this only happens the moment when Evan already is live.
Why not send out an email the day before or some hours before?
Or an activity calendar/scheduling app we (BN users) could sign up to?
Google calendar, Doodle, Meetup… Miho, maybe there is such a scheduling tool you could integrate here?

I need to research the subject properly to see what can be done (already got few ideas), it is on my to do list. However, if I make something like this work it should be on Evan’s personal website. 🙂

I just replied to someone in a comment on “our” channel and wanted to recommend the Book Club – so I searched for the previous videos.
Doing so I found the announcements of upcoming three hangouts for #EvansBook and an “Set Reminder” option.
I set the reminder, click, but don’t see an option to modify, when for example, I would like to be reminded.
Can we thank youtube for something half working again?
I am curious when it will actually remind me.

It is possible, Youtube has some serious issues lately with people not getting notifications about new videos from authors they are subscribed to. And some authors are randomly losing subscribers.

This is a good find Anita, I’d not seen the set reminder thing before.
I wish I could be more helpful, but for now, that Chrome Plugin has solved most issues for me: http://smarturl.it/ytlive
Actually, this official note from YouTube/Google may help:

Thanks J-Ryze ❣
And I missed the book club again, third time 😕
But now I figured it is Monday’s at 6pm my local time, UTC+01:00. Is that right?
I installed the extension but am not sure how to use it. I add tags? Which ones should I use?
And for some reason Chrome’s desktop notifications have been off. How does that happen? I don’t remember making changes.
The last three weeks have been superbusy for me. This week is busy too, then I will be able to pay attention again and also go more intuitively – maybe I will catch the shows.
But Gaurav is right, maybe just send the newsletter saying “Evan’s book club tomorrow at …” or use Doodle, MeetUp or so.
March 11, 2017 at 10:37 am #1246
To use the extension you
1. Click the lil Icon in your chrome bar
2. Click “Edit Tags”
3. Click “Channels”
4. Click ‘off’ next to any channel in order to toggle popup notifications.
Not sure about the rest of your Qs, and I believe book club is over? 😀
March 12, 2017 at 9:09 am #1256
I get an empty list when I click channels. Then it says “No channels, please click ‘Load’ in the header” and when I do it, it brings me to my youtube subscriptions and have no idea what to do, how to select or so.
But don’t mind, I got my pop up notifications back, that is a start.
Not sure if the book club is over, but Evan does other hangouts too. So, I will try to know when they happen =)

All good, Anita, I’m glad you achieved some progress anyway 🙂

Since I was having the same problem and because of that I had missed a lot of Episodes.. I think you all had figure out a good solution that may help alot.
But the best Reminder is the one email Newsletter.. But I got it only few times.. And if that possible to notify most through it.. It will be good.. But yeh I know that will not be easy as they are mostly predefined..
March 14, 2017 at 11:16 am #1261
Yeah, Evan is very careful not to ‘spam’ his email list with an email for every single video. 🙂
April 14, 2017 at 3:06 am #1336
Dammit, Evan was live again yesterday – I was out and got a notification on my phone.
If I would have know I would have been at home watching.
Isn’t there some way to be informed in advance? This again was so disappointing 😭
April 14, 2017 at 3:13 am #1337
Stop the world… Replying to myself – there WAS an email notification! I was only to busy to notice it…. aaaaaaaaaaaaaah! 😇 all good, all good.

LMAO LOL Anita!
This “Better Google Calendar” chrome plugin MAY have some alert/notify features that suit you?
